Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Looking for answers? Whether you're curious about our lawn care programs, landscape installations, or seasonal services, you'll find straightforward, helpful responses below.
Lawn Care & Fertilization
What’s included in your lawn care services?
Our lawn care programs include weekly mowing (March–November), weed control (if desired), lawn fertilization, insect and mole control (if desired), seasonal yard cleanup, lawn aeration, and nutrient applications like lime and iron. We start every new customer with a complimentary lawn analysis to ensure we’re giving your lawn exactly what it needs.
Do you offer one-time lawn mowing?
We do not offer one-time mowing. Lawn mowing is only available as part of a recurring maintenance package that includes both mowing and lawn health treatments.
Do you use herbicides or pesticides?
We can apply herbicides and insect control products, but we don't always use them. Some clients prefer a chemical-free approach. We explain the pros and cons before any application and always follow proper licensing guidelines.
How do I know what lawn services my yard needs?
That’s exactly why we begin with a free lawn analysis. One of our licensed lawn care technicians will assess your lawn’s condition and recommend a program based on soil health, grass type, weed presence, and more.
Is your lawn care service safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We use professional-grade products and follow all safety guidelines for applications. Our team will let you know if there are any temporary precautions to take after treatments, such as waiting a short period before allowing pets or children on the grass.
What's the difference between lawn rejuvenation and lawn renovation?
Rejuvenation focuses on improving an existing lawn’s health through aeration, overseeding, nutrition, and care without tearing it out. Renovation usually means starting over. We prefer rejuvenation whenever possible.
Are estimates free?
Yes. All estimates and proposals are free.
Landscape Installation
What’s included in your landscape design and installation services?
Our full-service landscaping includes plant selection, soil prep, bed installation, sod or seed, topsoil, drainage, edging, and features like raised garden boxes, pollinator gardens, and rock/gravel accents. We also offer lighting, irrigation, and hardscaping as part of a cohesive outdoor design.
Do you provide custom designs for every landscape?
Yes. Every project is tailored to the client and the property. Our experienced crew takes into account soil conditions, sun exposure, slope, and your personal style to create a landscape that’s both beautiful and practical.
Can you work with my existing landscaping?
Absolutely. Whether you’re starting fresh or renovating an existing yard, we can design around current features, reuse healthy plants, and create a seamless look that blends old with new.
What kind of plants do you recommend?
We focus on native and climate-adapted plants that thrive in Whatcom County’s soil and weather. We also offer sustainable and drought-tolerant options, along with pollinator-friendly garden designs for those looking to support the environment.
How much does professional landscaping cost?
Pricing depends on the scope of your project, the size of your property, and the materials you choose. Once we understand your goals and visit your property, we’ll provide a detailed quote with no pressure.
Is there a warranty on your landscaping work?
Yes. We stand behind the quality of our workmanship and plant material. While plant health can depend on care and weather conditions, we’ll provide guidance for maintenance and are happy to troubleshoot if you run into issues.
How far out are you booking landscaping work?
It depends on the season. In spring and summer, our install schedule fills quickly. We recommend reaching out early—many clients contact us 6–8 weeks in advance to secure a spot.
Do you offer sod installation?
Yes, we do! Our team is experienced in laying sod for instantly lush lawns.
Are estimates free?
Yes. All estimates and proposals are free.
Hardscaping
Do you install pavers, lighting, and drainage?
Yes. We offer landscape installations that include paver patios and walkways, low-voltage lighting, planting, French drains, and retaining walls.
What materials do you use for hardscape projects?
We’re a Belgard Authorized Contractor, which means we work with Belgard’s high-quality pavers and hardscape products. We also install materials from other manufacturers if you have something specific in mind.
Do you offer design help for my outdoor space?
Yes! Hardscape design is a collaborative part of our process. We’ll work with your ideas and budget to create a design that complements your home and landscape. We can also suggest materials and layouts that suit Whatcom County’s climate and soil.
How much does hardscaping cost?
Costs depend on the scope of your project, chosen materials, and site conditions. We’re happy to provide a free estimate after we’ve seen your property and learned more about your goals.
Is hardscaping worth the investment?
Absolutely. Quality hardscaping adds lasting value to your property by improving curb appeal, creating usable outdoor space, and reducing maintenance needs. We back our work with a 10-year workmanship warranty on all paver and wall installations.
Can you match my hardscaping to my existing landscaping?
Yes. Our team has years of experience blending new hardscape features with existing plants, gardens, and yard structures. We make sure everything looks cohesive and natural.
What types of materials are best for retaining walls?
The materials most commonly used to build retaining walls include:
- Wood or timbers
- Stone masonry
- Concrete blocks or bricks
- Poured concrete
Each material has its own set of benefits, whether it’s price, durability, or aesthetic appeal. Our technicians are experts at installing retaining walls and will give you their recommendations when they visit your property.
Gardening & Bed Maintenance
What does bed maintenance include?
Bed maintenance can include weeding, pruning, deadheading, trimming, bark or mulch spreading, and general clean-up. We bundle this service with mowing for best results.
Do you offer one-time gardening or weeding?
We focus on recurring maintenance plans. However, seasonal clean-ups and mulch installs are available as one-time services.
Can I request just bark or mulch spreading?
Yes, bark and mulch spreading can be scheduled as an a la carte service, though many clients include it as part of seasonal clean-ups or ongoing gardening.
What type of mulch is best for my yard?
The type of mulch we choose for your yard from our two available varieties depends on the specific growing conditions of your property. For example, black composted mulch is great at counteracting the effects of direct sunlight, while medium fir mulch can often be suitable for shady yards.
Do you offer tree trimming?
Yes, we offer tree trimming and pruning services. If we determine a tree cannot be saved with trimming, we’ll also offer tree removal.
What types of plants grow well in Whatcom County?
The plants that work best for your yard in Whatcom County depend on where you live in the county, your property’s elevation, and the composition of your soil. However, these are some of the native plants and shrubs that we recommend for the region:
- Tall Oregon grape
- Beebalm
- Salmonberry
- Bleeding heart
- Giant camas
- Douglas aster
- Juniper
- Nootka rose
- Pacific crabapple
- False lily of the valley
Yard Cleanups
What’s included in a yard cleanup service?
That depends on your needs! Yard cleanup can include leaf and debris removal, moss treatment, invasive plant removal, gutter cleaning, pressure washing, and more. We’ll walk your property with you to recommend the right services and provide a clear estimate.
How much does a yard cleanup cost?
Prices vary depending on the size of your property and the type of work involved. After a quick site visit, we’ll send you a no-obligation quote so you know exactly what to expect.
Do I need to be home for the cleanup?
Nope! As long as we have access to the areas that need work, we can take care of everything and update you afterward. If you’d like to walk the property with us before we begin, we’re happy to schedule a time that works for you.
What happens to all the yard waste you remove?
We’ll haul away and responsibly dispose of leaves, limbs, invasive plants, and any other debris we clean up from your property—no extra effort needed from you.
Synthetic Turf
What type of synthetic turf do you install?
We install premium synthetic turf suitable for PNW weather. It drains well, looks natural, and holds up year-round.
Is synthetic turf a good option for the Pacific Northwest?
Yes. Our turf is selected specifically for our region’s rain, shade, and seasonal changes. It's a great option for low-maintenance lawns or shady areas where grass struggles to grow.
What’s the difference between synthetic turf and artificial grass?
Great question—synthetic turf and artificial grass refer to the same product. At North County, we often use the term synthetic turf to reflect the advanced, natural-looking quality of the materials we install. Unlike the old turf you might remember from sports fields, today’s synthetic turf is soft, realistic, and designed to mimic real grass in both look and feel.
How long does synthetic turf last?
Most synthetic turf installations last between 15 to 20 years, depending on the product and how much foot traffic it receives. With proper installation and occasional light maintenance, your turf can stay green and beautiful for well over a decade.
Is artificial grass safe for pets and kids?
Yes! We offer pet-friendly turf options that feature antimicrobial fibers and fast-draining backing to make cleanup easy and hygienic. Our turf is free from harmful chemicals and provides a soft, cushioned surface that’s great for kids and pets alike.
How do I maintain synthetic turf?
Maintenance is minimal. You may want to rinse your turf with a hose occasionally to remove dust, pollen, or pet waste. For high-traffic areas, brushing the blades once in a while can help keep them standing upright and looking fresh. No mowing, fertilizing, or watering needed.
Do you install at-home putting greens?
You bet! We’ll handle everything, from clearing your existing grass to an accurate installation.
Irrigation
Do you install irrigation systems?
Yes. We install new irrigation systems and offer service and repairs for existing ones.
Can you upgrade my old sprinkler system?
Absolutely. We can replace outdated heads, adjust zones, and improve water efficiency using modern parts and smart controllers.
What’s the difference between sprinklers and irrigation?
“Irrigation” is the correct industry term and includes all components—controllers, valves, piping, and heads—not just sprinklers.
How much does sprinkler installation cost?
The cost of installation depends on the size of your property, landscape needs, and the system design. We’ll provide a free site assessment and customized estimate so you know exactly what to expect—no surprises.
Do I need to be home for maintenance visits?
Not necessarily. If we have access to your sprinkler system controls and water supply, we can handle most service tasks without you being home. We’ll communicate clearly and keep you updated either way.
How do seasonal sprinkler adjustments work?
Seasonal adjustments are quick tune-ups that help your system respond to changing weather conditions. We’ll adjust watering times, zones, and schedules to avoid overwatering or underwatering throughout the year.
Winter Services (Snow & Ice)
What cities do you serve for snow and ice removal?
Do you offer residential snow removal?
No. Our winter services are strictly commercial.
Do you relocate snow?
We’ve never had to relocate snow. Our service is designed around plowing and de-icing without the need for off-site relocation.
Do you offer pre-treatment or anti-icing services?
Yes. We apply anti-icing treatments before storms to help prevent ice from bonding to surfaces. This proactive step reduces slip hazards for pedestrians and improves vehicle traction in drive lanes and parking areas.
Do you clear sidewalks and walkways?
Yes. Sidewalk and walkway clearing is a key part of our commercial service. Our team will shovel or mechanically clear walkways and apply de-icer as needed to help prevent slips and falls.
Scheduling & Billing
How do I get started?
Start by calling our office or submitting a form online. We’ll schedule a free estimate or send a proposal, depending on the service. Once approved, we’ll handle the rest professionally and on schedule.
Do you answer your phones?
Yes! We pride ourselves on answering the phone on the first ring during business hours. Reliable communication is part of the North County difference.
Our Process
How does the process work once I contact you?
When you call our office or submit a form online, our Sales Admin will reach out to learn more about your project. We may ask a few follow-up questions or request photos depending on the type of service you're interested in.
Will someone visit my property before I get a quote?
For design-build projects (like installations), yes, we schedule a site visit to understand your goals and property layout. For lawn care services, we can often prepare a quote using aerial mapping and your intake form, without needing an on-site visit.
What happens after I receive a proposal?
Once you’ve reviewed the proposal, you can approve it as-is or request changes. We’re happy to answer any questions. When you’re ready, we’ll send over a contract and request a deposit (if applicable).
How soon can you start?
That depends on the time of year and the service requested. Some lawn services can start within a few days. Larger landscaping installs may be booked out several weeks in peak season. We’ll give you a realistic start timeline during the proposal phase.
Who do I contact once work begins?
You’ll have a clear point of contact throughout your service. Our office is fully staffed and always ready to help—you won’t be left wondering who to call.
